Absolutely. Solar panels often contain trace amounts of heavy metals which can be harmful if not properly handled, sprawling solar farms can disrupt wildlife habitats, and solar panel recycling leaves a lot to be desired.\r\n\r\n<strong>But don't let perfect be the enemy of good.<\/strong> Solar energy has a much, much smaller impact on the environment than fossil fuels in <em>at least <\/em>five ways.\r\n\r\nLet's start with the environmental benefit that most people associate with solar panels: Reducing carbon emissions.\r\n<h2><a id=\"carbon\"><\/a>Lifecycle emissions of solar vs fossil fuels<\/h2>\r\nPerhaps the biggest environmental benefit of solar energy is its incredibly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/what-is-the-carbon-footprint-of-solar-panels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small carbon footprint<\/a>. According to the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),<strong> the lifecycle emissions per kWh of electricity produced by rooftop solar are: <\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Around 12 times less than electricity generated by natural gas (perhaps closer to 20 times less after factoring in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/07\/14\/1187648553\/natural-gas-can-rival-coals-climate-warming-potential-when-leaks-are-counted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">methane leaks from natural gas<\/a>)<\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Around 20 times less than electricity generated by coal<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.solar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/carbon-footprint-of-solar-vs-coal.png\" alt=\"chart depicting life cycle emissions of energy sources\" width=\"826\" height=\"412\" \/>\r\n\r\nThe term <strong>lifecycle emissions<\/strong> is important because it includes the carbon footprint of manufacturing solar panels (where most of its emissions come from) to decommissioning them at the end of their useful life.\r\n\r\nSam breaks it down even further\u00a0 in the video below, but here\u2019s the upshot:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Over 25 years, the average rooftop solar system offsets ~200,000 pounds of CO2 equivalent emissions (roughly the size of a blue whale)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>There are several realistic and meaningful opportunities to reduce the carbon footprint of solar panels further<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j2WnaIN9yg0?si=pTv541nhKBn_leot\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\r\n\r\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s worth noting that reducing CO2 and other emissions isn\u2019t only about curbing climate change \u2013 it\u2019s also about improving the quality of the air that supports life on planet Earth.\r\n\r\nIn fact, a <a href=\"https:\/\/aqli.epic.uchicago.edu\/reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Air Quality Life Index report<\/a> found that \u201cair pollution is the greatest external threat to human life expectancy on the planet\u201d and \u201creducing global PM2.5 air pollution to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline would add 2.3 years onto average human life expectancy.\u201d\r\n\r\nSo, solar energy is a massive environmental upgrade when it comes to reducing the emissions that fuel climate change <em>and<\/em> improving local air quality.\r\n<h2><a id=\"land\"><\/a>Land use of solar panels<\/h2>\r\nLand use may sound like an odd environmental benefit of solar energy, especially if you picture sprawling solar farms covering desert landscapes, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/docs\/fy22osti\/81644.pdf\">2022 study by the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL)<\/a> found that <strong>the land required for all of the solar, wind, and transmission infrastructure to decarbonize the US power sector by 2035 adds up to less than 1% of the available land in the continental US.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nIn fact, it\u2019s less than the area currently being used for railroads and less than half of the land dedicated to active oil and gas leases, as shown in the map below.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.solar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/solar-land-use.png\" alt=\"US map depicting the land use of various industries and energy sources\" width=\"1115\" height=\"773\" \/>\r\n\r\n<em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/docs\/fy22osti\/81644.pdf\">Image source.<\/a><\/span><\/em>\r\n\r\nThe study doesn\u2019t take into account rooftop solar because\u2026 well\u2026 rooftop solar doesn\u2019t use any additional land. And there are several mixed-use applications for solar panels to consider.\r\n\r\nFor example, agrivoltaics is the practice of siting solar panels above crops and livestock areas (see feature photo). This technique has been found to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-beer-solar-panels-hops-germany-ee3d00a1877837eb85053335e3b68a00\">increase certain crop yields<\/a> by shading plants from intense sunshine and retaining ground moisture, and it also provides a <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2023\/08\/19\/agrivoltaics-is-making-friends-across-partisan-lines-thanks-to-farmers\/\">secondary source of income for the hardworking farmers<\/a> who feed the world.\r\n\r\nSolar panels are also being installed in urban locations above <a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/putting-solar-panels-atop-parking-lots-a-green-energy-solution\">parking lots<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/california-solar-panels-canals-drought\/\">water canals<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/innovation\/south-korean-20-mile-solar-bike-highway-generates-electricity\">bike lanes<\/a> to simultaneously create shade and clean energy right where it\u2019s needed.\r\n\r\nFinally, in a practice known as \"floatovoltaics,\" solar panels are floated on reservoirs and wastewater treatment plants. The water cools the panels to increase efficiency during peak sun hours, and the panels shade the water to reduce evaporation loss.\r\n\r\nAnd that brings us to our next point\u2026\r\n<h2><a id=\"water\"><\/a>Water use of solar panels vs fossil fuels<\/h2>\r\nFresh water is a crucial part of the environment, but it\u2019s typically not the first thing people consider when it comes to generating and distributing energy. However, transitioning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/is-solar-energy-renewable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renewable energy<\/a> \u2013 namely wind and solar \u2013 could free up massive amounts of fresh water for farming and aquatic ecosystems.\r\n\r\nIn 2019, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1364032119305994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review of 32 water use studies<\/a> found that the <strong>median life cycle water consumption of photovoltaic solar is 330 liters per megawatt-hour of electricity, which boils down to a third of a liter of water per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of solar electricity<\/strong> \u2013 or just under 12 fluid ounces.\r\n\r\nFor context, one kWh is roughly what you need to power a refrigerator for 24 hours, and 12 fluid ounces is the volume of a standard can of soda pop.\r\n\r\nHow does that compare to other types of electricity generation? And that\u2019s not even considering:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>The potential to reduce evaporation loss in canals and reservoirs<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Oil and petro-chemicals spills like the Exxon Valdez, Deepwater Horizon, and pipeline ruptures that devastate ecosystems<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Everyday oil and gas runoff from cars that pollutes waterways<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n[pnpZip background=true border=true primary_color=\"#8b72d3\" content_texts=true utm_campaign=\"get_started_injectable\" utm_medium=\"solar panels benefit environment\" upper_text= \"Compare quotes from multiple\" upper_text_span = \"trusted installers\" lower_text= \"See how much solar could lower your\" lower_text_span = \"energy costs\" get_started_text = \"Get started\"]\r\n<h2><a id=\"material\"><\/a>Mining and material use<\/h2>\r\nMining for materials is often seen as a blemish on the environmental impact of solar, and there\u2019s no doubt that mining for the silicon, aluminum, copper, and silver used to manufacture solar panels is environmentally problematic. That\u2019s something the solar industry has to own up to and improve on.\r\n\r\nBut it\u2019s also worth zooming out a bit.\r\n\r\nIn 2023, data scientist Hannah Ritchie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com\/p\/mining-low-carbon-vs-fossil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crunched the numbers on the total mining needs for a clean energy transition<\/a> and found that to rapidly transition to a clean energy economy, we\u2019d need to scale \u201clow-carbon\u201d energy mining up to 28 million tons of materials per year \u2013 about 7 times the amount we\u2019re currently extracting.\r\n\r\nThat sounds like a lot of mining\u2026 until you weigh it against the 15 <strong>billion <\/strong>tons of coal, oil, and natural gas <em>currently being mined each year <\/em>by the fossil fuel industry.\r\n\r\n<strong>Yes, that\u2019s billions \u2013 with a B \u2013 of tons of fossil fuels extracted each year and around 535 times more than the total mining tonnage required for a clean energy economy.<\/strong> It\u2019s also worth noting that mining for solar is just one part of the 28 million tons of minerals needed for low-carbon energy resources, which includes materials for wind, hydro, EVs, batteries, nuclear, and transmission infrastructure.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.solar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/solar-vs-fossil-fuel-mining.png\" alt=\"Chart depicting the tons of materials mined for low-carbon energy versus fossil fuels\" width=\"2195\" height=\"1916\" \/>\r\n\r\nNow, you may be wondering how this is even possible. How can fossil fuels require so much more mining than low-carbon energy sources? It boils down to how efficiently these materials are used.\r\n<h3>Materials use of solar vs fossil fuels<\/h3>\r\nThe key difference between mining materials for solar energy and fossil fuel energy is that with solar you are using the materials solely to build infrastructure, while with fossil fuels you are mining for infrastructure <em>and\u00a0<\/em>fuel.\r\n\r\nTheoretically, all the materials mined to build energy infrastructure can be recycled. However, it\u2019s virtually impossible to recycle coal, oil, and gas once it has been burned and released into the atmosphere.\r\n\r\nWhile there\u2019s a lot to be desired from <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/recycle-solar-panel-circular-economy-sustainability-dc7284bab2180b5bd86ff5cb5c847652\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar panel recycling<\/a> (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nightly-news\/video\/millions-in-the-u-s-live-near-abandoned-oil-and-gas-wells-linked-to-explosions-and-toxins-190986309805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the end-life of oil wells<\/a>, for that matter), fossil fuels have an insatiable appetite for mined fuels that far outweighs the material needs for renewable energy.\r\n<h2><a id=\"noise\"><\/a>Noise pollution<\/h2>\r\nWe\u2019ve covered how solar energy is better for the environment than fossil fuels in terms of air, land, water, and mining. <strong>But perhaps the most overlooked environmental benefit of solar energy is that it\u2019s <em>quiet<\/em>.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nNoise pollution is linked to \u201cstress related illnesses, high blood pressure, speech interference, hearing loss, sleep disruption, and lost productivity,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/clean-air-act-overview\/clean-air-act-title-iv-noise-pollution#:~:text=Health%20Effects&amp;text=Problems%20related%20to%20noise%20include,sleep%20disruption%2C%20and%20lost%20productivity.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the EPA<\/a>.\r\n\r\nLike any energy source, there is noise associated with manufacturing and installing solar panels. However, with no moving parts or combustion, solar panels themselves are virtually noiseless except for a soft hum from the inverter, which is capped at 45 decibels (about the volume of a quiet room) and only occurs during the day.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.solar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/noise-pollution.png\" alt=\"Chart depicting noise levels measured in decibels\" width=\"1576\" height=\"876\" \/>\r\n\r\nMeanwhile, coal and natural gas power plants generate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turbomachinerymag.com\/view\/noise-levels-at-energy-plants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on average, 80-85 decibels<\/a> \u2013 somewhere between a vacuum cleaner and city traffic \u2013 which can negatively impact workers and the surrounding community. For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ia.cpuc.ca.gov\/Environment\/info\/esa\/divest-edison\/chapters\/chap4_10.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ellwood gas power plant in Santa Barbara County<\/a>, Cali. is located within 200 feet of school property, where noise levels from the plant can contribute 60-64 decibels.\r\n\r\nNot only are solar panels quieter than fossil fuels, they can actually help mitigate noise pollution.
