The bad news is that it\u2019s not as easy as changing a few light bulbs and unplugging appliances (as other articles suggest).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making deep cuts to your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/why-is-my-electricity-bill-so-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electricity bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires a combination of reducing your consumption <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the price you pay for electricity. According to the DOE, standby power (aka \u201cvampire power\u201d) accounts for 5-10% of household electricity usage \u2013 which is a substantial chunk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can lower this drain on your consumption by unplugging appliances, using smart plugs and\/or power strips, and upgrading to energy efficient appliances. Some key appliances to focus on are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bathroom: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair dryers, curling irons, electric shavers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kitchen: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microwaves, toaster ovens, coffee makers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Living room: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older entertainment devices (cable boxes, DVRs, DVD players)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Office:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Laptops, PCs, gaming consoles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bedroom: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phone chargers, lamps, fans<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say this reduces your consumption by another 5% \u2013 you\u2019ve only got 5% left to go!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From here, you have plenty of options:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower the setting on your water heater from 140 to 120 degrees<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increase the temperature on in your fridge up to 38 degrees (but never higher than 40!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seal windows and doors to reduce heating and cooling costs even further<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hang dry clothes to prevent running the clothes dryer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upgrade to LED bulbs and energy efficient appliances<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know, I know\u2026 I\u2019m starting to sound like those other articles.
