This rate is a combination of Con Edison\u2019s current delivery charges (14.1 cents per kWh) and supply charges (10.3 cents per kWh). However, Con Edison has <a href=\"#plans\">several rate plans<\/a>, each with unique rates that can vary by season, time of day, and your monthly usage.<\/p>\n<p>Con Edison rates are a combination of two things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Supply charges: <\/strong>The cost of the electricity you use<\/li>\n<li><strong>Delivery charges: <\/strong>The cost of getting that electricity to your home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Con Edison separates supply and delivery charges on their bills, as shown below. To find your total cost per kWh of electricity for the month, simply add the two rates together.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11739 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.solar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/ConEdison-delivery-and-supply-chargers.jpg\" alt=\"ConEdison delivery and supply chargers\" width=\"1024\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s the average electricity bill in New York?<\/h3>\n<p>The average electricity bill for residential Con Edison customers in New York is around $170 per month. This is based on an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/how-many-kwh-per-day-is-normal\/\">average usage of 600 kWh per month<\/a> at 24 cents per kWh, an $18 basic service charge, taxes, and surcharges.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, electricity bills quite a bit based on your consumption for the month and your rate plan. Next, we\u2019ll take a look at the residential rate plans offered by Con Edison.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"plans\"><\/a>Con Edison rate plans in 2024<\/h2>\n<p>Con Edison offers both standard and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/time-of-use-rates\/\">time-of-use (TOU)<\/a> rates to residential customers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>EL1 &#8211; Rate I<\/strong> &#8211; The standard rate plan for residential customers<\/li>\n<li><strong>EL1 &#8211; Rate II<\/strong> &#8211; A TOU plan for customers who voluntarily enrolled <em>before<\/em> March 2014<\/li>\n<li><strong>EL1 &#8211; Rate III <\/strong>&#8211; A TOU plan for customers who voluntarily enroll(ed) <em>after<\/em> March 2014<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look at each one\u2026<\/p>\n<h3>Con Edison Standard Rates: EL1 &#8211; Rate I<\/h3>\n<p>The Rate I plan is the default option for residential Con Edison customers and comes with an $18 monthly basic service charge. So, you can expect to surpass the 250 kWh threshold in the summer when you\u2019re running your air conditioner.<\/p>\n<h3>Con Edison TOU Rates: EL1 &#8211; Rates II<\/h3>\n<p>The Rates II plan is a time-of-use plan, which means the cost of electricity varies based on \u201cPeak\u201d and \u201cOff-Peak\u201d periods throughout the day. In 2023, Peak supply charges exceeded 13 cents per kWh in the summer, pushing the combined rate for this plan north of 70 cents per kWh!<\/p>\n<h3>Con Edison TOU Rates: EL1 &#8211; Rates III<\/h3>\n<p>Rates III is Con Edison\u2019s (relatively) new TOU plan for residential customers that voluntarily opt-in on or after March 1, 2014. As of January 1, 2024 this plan has a basic service charge of $19 per month and delivery charges ranging from 2.33 cents to 33.05 cents per kWh.<\/p>\n<p>Rates III also has different Peak and Off-Peak windows than Rates II. Since 2014, the base delivery charge for the Rate I plan has increased from 9 to 14 cents per kWh. That\u2019s an average of 4% per year, which is slightly higher than the national average of 3% per year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11743 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.solar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/ConEd-rates-2014-2024-1024x853.png\" alt=\"ConEd rates 2014-2024\" width=\"1024\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And these annual rate hikes are to be expected. As a monopoly, regulated utilities like Con Edison legally can\u2019t profit from of the electricity they sell. Instead, they make money by building infrastructure and charging their customers a premium for it through delivery rates.<\/p>\n<p>So, until the aging central grid is fully updated or Con Edison\u2019s investors decide they don\u2019t need to make a profit, it\u2019s safe to expect future rate hikes.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"solar\"><\/a>Con Edison Rates Versus Solar<\/h2>\n<p>While most homeowners try to reduce their energy consumption in order to reduce their electricity bill, rooftop solar allows you to reduce <em>the price you pay<\/em> for electricity \u2013 especially in New York.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/going-solar-in-new-york-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York is home to some of the best solar incentives in the US<\/a>. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Net metering<\/li>\n<li>30% federal tax credit<\/li>\n<li>25% state tax credit (up to $5,000)<\/li>\n<li>NYSERDA rebates worth $200 per kW installed<\/li>\n<li>Property and sales tax exemptions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you use 750 kWh per month and you\u2019re sick of your high Con Edison bills (especially in the summer). How much could you save by going solar?<\/p>\n<p>With New York\u2019s sun, you\u2019d need a 9 kW solar system to offset your usage (which you can do through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/what-is-net-energy-metering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">net metering<\/a>).
