After all, batteries are the Swiss Army Knife of home energy, providing savings benefits, backup power, and more.<\/p>\n<p>But now that only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/solar-lease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar leases<\/a> and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) qualify for a federal tax credit, can you still add a battery to your home solar project?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jump ahead:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#can\">Can I Add Battery Storage to a Solar Lease or PPA?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#do\">Do battery projects qualify for a federal tax credit?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#add\">Can I add a purchased battery to a leased solar system?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong><a id=\"can\"><\/a>Can I Add Battery Storage to a Solar Lease or PPA?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Yes, in many cases, battery storage can be added to residential solar leases and PPAs with expressed permission from the system owner (the lease or PPA company). The system owner may have restrictions on which batteries can be added and how they are used.<\/p>\n<p>Why the restrictions?<\/p>\n<p>Solar leases and PPAs both fall under the umbrella of Third-Party Owned (TPO) solar, in which a business owns the system on your roof, collects the tax credit, and offers you a low, predictable rate for the electricity it produces. Every third-party owner of residential solar projects allows batteries. However, they don\u2019t always allow them on <em>all<\/em> projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The underlying question they\u2019re going to ask is this:<\/strong> Can adding residential solar battery storage create sufficient value to offset the cost to install and maintain it? And the answer largely depends on how the battery will be used.<\/p>\n<h3>Battery storage primarily for cost savings<\/h3>\n<p>In locations like California, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/time-of-use-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Time of Use rates<\/a> and net metering that doesn\u2019t allow solar to achieve \u201cfull\u201d value when it&#8217;s sent back to the grid, adding a battery can more than pay for itself by capturing solar production and deploying it when it provides the home the greatest value. Think of the battery as only cashing out a stock position when the stock is at its peak for the day.<\/p>\n<p>In many locations, utilities are subsidizing battery installations because they provide valuable grid services in the form of Virtual Power Plants\u201d (VPPs). If your project qualifies for one of these subsidies, then you can likely include a battery in your project at a very attractive cost. It\u2019s important to read the details of these programs, however, as they generally allow the utility some control of your battery\u2019s operation.<\/p>\n<h3>Battery storage primarily for backup power<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re in a location like the Gulf Coast, you might want a battery purely for resiliency purposes. While this is of great value to you, it\u2019s hard for the third-party owner to quantify that value. And, if the cost to install and maintain your solar and battery project doesn\u2019t allow them to provide you with electricity at or lower than your utility, then the system doesn\u2019t pencil and the third-party owner may disallow the battery as part of the project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<gs-injectable background = 'true' border='true' primary_color = '#8b72d3' secondary_color='#f98d7e' utm_campaign = 'get_started_injectable' utm_medium='adding battery to solar lease' content_texts = 'true' upper_text='Explore your options for' upper_text_span = 'solar and battery storage' lower_text='See how much could lower your' lower_text_span = 'energy costs' get_started_text='Get started' only_community_solar='false'><\/gs-injectable>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><a id=\"do\"><\/a>Do battery projects qualify for a federal tax credit?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/trumps-one-big-beautiful-bill-is-now-law-how-it-impacts-solar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Big Beautiful Bill<\/a> introduced a host of new rules and regulations surrounding what projects are eligible for the tax credit and which aren\u2019t. One of the largest changes is the introduction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/what-in-the-feoc-is-going-on-solar-and-foreign-entity-of-concern-rules-in-the-obbb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cFEOC\u201d rules<\/a>, which disallow projects that utilize more than a set threshold of components from Chinese companies from receiving the benefit of the tax credit.<\/p>\n<p>Given China\u2019s strong ambitions in the energy space, they\u2019ve invested heavily in solar and battery equipment manufacturing\u2014and a lot of that Chinese capacity has ended up in residential solar batteries. While we\u2019ll likely see supply chains evolve over time, manufacturing a battery is a complex and setting up a factory is capital-intensive. Therefore, new factories with FEOC-compliant products can\u2019t be turned on overnight.<\/p>\n<p>This means the pool of available battery suppliers will likely dramatically shrink in 2026 relative to 2025, and homeowners will have limited selection on which batteries they can add to a third-party-owned solar project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><a id=\"add\"><\/a>Can I add a purchased battery to a leased solar system?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>So what\u2019s a homeowner to do if they want a solar battery but it can\u2019t be rolled into a lease? It is possible to own the battery separately from the solar array, although there needs to be a clear line of what equipment is yours versus what equipment is owned by a third-party (your lease or PPA provider).<\/p>\n<p>Before adding battery storage, it&#8217;s often required to get permission from the third-party solar owner and have the original solar installer perform the battery installation.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Are there still tax credits for residential battery storage?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Under the One Big Beautiful Bill, which created the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/trump-and-the-fate-of-the-30-solar-tax-credit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">premature ending of the solar tax credits<\/a>, battery systems actually phase out on a different timeline and extend well beyond the expiration of the solar tax credits.
