However, there are federal, state, and local incentives that can maximize your solar savings.<\/p>\n<p>The incentives fall into two broad categories: tax incentives and rebates. Let\u2019s start by digging into the tax incentives.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"tax\"><\/a>California solar and battery tax incentives<\/h3>\n<p>The following California solar incentives come in the form of tax credits, exemptions, and exclusions. Consult a licensed tax professional for advice regarding tax incentives.<\/p>\n<h4>Federal solar and battery tax credit<\/h4>\n<p>The first tax incentive to mention is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/federal-solar-tax-credit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>30% federal solar tax credit<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 also known as the ITC or Residential Clean Energy Credit.<\/p>\n<p>This federal tax credit is worth 30% of the cost of installing solar and battery storage systems with <em>no limit<\/em>. And, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, the ITC will remain at 30% until 2032 and now applies to battery storage that isn\u2019t hooked up to solar.<\/p>\n<h4>Property tax exclusion<\/h4>\n<p>Studies by Zillow and\u00a0Berkeley Lab found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/do-solar-panels-increase-home-value\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar panels increase home values<\/a> by up to $4,000 per kW. And Californians know better than anyone else that higher property value means higher property taxes.<\/p>\n<p>But thanks to California\u2019s Active Solar Energy System Exclusion, <strong>rooftop solar systems installed before January 1, 2025 won\u2019t be assessed in property valuations, and therefore won\u2019t increase your property tax.<\/strong> According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.ca.gov\/proptaxes\/active-solar-energy-system.htm#Description\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California State Board of Equalization<\/a>, this tax exclusion applies to solar systems \u201cwhere the energy is used to provide for the collection, storage, or distribution of solar energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It does not apply to solar swimming pool heaters or hot tub heaters.<\/p>\n<h4>Property-Assessed Clean Energy (PACE)<\/h4>\n<p>Access to financing is often the biggest hurdle to going solar, but the PACE program \u2013 known as the Home Energy Renovation Opportunity (HERO) program in California \u2013 is one way to go solar with zero money down.<\/p>\n<p>Through the HERO program, your state or local government teams up with a local lender to fund the upfront cost of your solar project.
