They take the edge off the initial investment of going solar, which leads to even more savings on energy costs. In fact, more powerful panels and other advances are making solar energy more cost-effective than it\u2019s ever been.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California is one of the best states to take advantage of rebates and incentives, but they won\u2019t be around forever. Some expire on a set date, and some when funds run out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s an updated list of some great rebates available to homeowners in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Solar Rebates Available in California<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seia.org\/initiatives\/solar-investment-tax-credit-itc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investment Tax Credit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ITC) is a 30 percent tax credit for homeowners. How does it work? You\u2019ll pay for the solar panel system in full, but then you can deduct 30 percent of what you paid for it when you file your federal income tax return. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/itc-step-down-effects-solar-installation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ITC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> applies only to purchasing a solar system, not to leasing it or getting it with a PPA (Purchase Power Agreement).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/itc-step-down-effects-solar-installation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ITC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers 30 percent through 2019 but will reduce to 26 percent in 2020, and 22 percent in 2021. The rebate will end for residential customers after 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much you can save with solar panels depends on when you act. The sooner you take advantage of the solar Investment Tax Credit, the healthier your savings will be.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State Solar Rebates Available in California<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California Solar Initiative (CSI) cash<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back rebates<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for PG&amp;E (Pacific Gas and Electric Company), SCE (Southern California Edison), and SDG&amp;E (San Diego Gas &amp; Electricity) have expired.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you can still take advantage of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Solar Homes Partnership (NSHP)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re looking to build a new home with a new solar panel system too.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current incentive rate range for market-rate housing is from $0.50\/Watt up to $1.25\/Watt depending on the energy-efficiency tier of the residence. But, you\u2019ll need to get your application in by April 1, 2018, as the <\/span><strong>program is set to close June 1, 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 15% increase of the incentive (up to $500) for west-facing arrays, however, did <\/span><strong>expire in March of 2017.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another rebate<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of note is the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpuc.ca.gov\/sgip\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self Generation Incentive Program (SGIP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for homeowners looking to buy battery storage. Customers of PG&amp;E, SCE, or SDG&amp;E are eligible for an incentive as high as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$400 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for installing a home battery<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can offset or even cover the cost of a battery. Check this video to see what is a kilowatt hour.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; display: block;\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mdSzZk3TwhE?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-service=\"youtube\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Battery storage has several advantages, especially as California switches over to time-of-use (TOU) rates and Net Metering 2.0 (NEM 2.0).\u00a0With a backup battery at home, you can store energy and use it when it would cost more to pull it from the grid. Find out more about NEM 2.0 in the\u00a0video below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; display: block;\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_1aXGEt0Fsw?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-service=\"youtube\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><strong>program sunsets at the end of 2020<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But the incentives will decrease as more batteries are installed in California, so you\u2019ll get more back as an early adopter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local Solar Rebates Available in California<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has a solar incentive program<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that currently offers $0.25\/Watt off to residential solar customers. The program <\/span><strong>expires when the remaining funds of $10 million are exhausted.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glendale Water and Power offered an incentive program called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solar Solutions Incentive Program<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but it<\/span> <strong>is now closed.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pasadena Water and Power offer<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$0.30\/Watt on systems between 1 kW and 100 kW through their expected performance-based buydown option or $0.096\/kWh with their performance-based incentive for systems larger than 100 kW. But the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pasadena solar rebate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will <\/span><strong>expire on December 31, 2017. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will be eligible as long as you submit your application before the expiration date.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Francisco Public Utilities Commission <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoSolarSF<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rebate is still available. It varies by system size but is currently still offering $500 &#8211; $2,800. There\u2019s <\/span><strong>no specific expiration date for this rebate<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it has enough funding to keep the program available for the foreseeable future.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While energy rates in California are some of the highest in the nation, switching to solar can make those rates manageable.
