In a direct hit, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/science-and-health\/2017\/9\/26\/16365994\/hurricane-maria-2017-puerto-rico-san-juan-humanitarian-disaster-electricty-fuel-flights-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria obliterated power lines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and triggered a humanitarian crisis of previously unseen proportions in the U.S. territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 85 percent of residents are still without electricity and with almost no cell service. Puerto Ricans are struggling to survive and largely cut off from the world. Most people in Puerto Rico still have no running water, no way to store food, and hospitals are running on diesel generators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovering from disaster on an island is particularly difficult. Importing supplies and fuel for generators is more expensive and takes longer. This is especially true with extensive damage to the roadways in Puerto Rico. Current estimates are that power will not return to the 3.4 million residents until March 2018. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Power in Puerto Rico before Maria<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puerto Rico\u2019s electricity infrastructure was faulty before the hurricane. There were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2017\/09\/20\/puerto-ricos-power-company-was-already-bankrupt-then-hurricane-maria-hit\/?utm_term=.e3e64af77291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2,478 miles of transmission lines stemming from power plants, and 31,485 miles of distribution lines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the island. Many of those lines were in difficult-to-reach mountainous and forested areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Power outages were frequent as the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) is bankrupt \u2013 at least $9 billion in debt. As funds and skilled workers dwindled, PREPA struggled to repair what was broken, rather than proactively maintain the grid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-storm, recovery is a painfully slow process. Some regions must be rebuilt by expensive methods such as flying in poles and lines by helicopter. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How solar is helping Puerto Rico now <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jigar Shaw, president of Generate Capital, sees the solar industry as growing and better able to respond to emergencies, as compared to just a few years ago. He noted in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greentechmedia.com\/articles\/read\/the-solar-industry-wants-to-help-puerto-rico#gs.gVzEvJM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greentech Media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cWe have the ability to do things we weren\u2019t previously able to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seia.org\/disaster-response\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEIA is coordinating solar efforts to help<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with immediate relief. Companies are donating solar generators, solar lanterns, other equipment, and even installation services.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could energy in Puerto Rico be more secure with solar?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state of energy in Puerto Rico has many people asking if Puerto Rico\u2019s power grid could be rebuilt in a smarter way. The advantages of solar and a more resilient grid could drastically improve recovery time, reducing casualties and illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While any hardware can be damaged during a storm, solar systems did hold up considerably better than transmission lines. Many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greentechmedia.com\/articles\/read\/puerto-rico-clean-energy-industry-prevent-maria-scale-damage#gs.KQ0db8M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solar installations in Puerto Rico sustained only 10 to 15 percent damage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as opposed to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/2017\/09\/25\/hot-isolated-and-running-out-of-supplies-parts-of-puerto-rico-near-desperation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80 percent damage to PREPA\u2019s transmission lines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How renewable energy could help stabilize Puerto Rico long term <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distributed or off-grid systems are another way solar could strengthen energy resilience on the island. Building microgrids would prevent the entire energy system being knocked out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an example, if one or two bulbs on a string of twinkle lights are loose or missing, the whole string loses power. But with several short strings, the repair is focused on a smaller area and sections light up again sooner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local solar power systems wouldn\u2019t be brought down with the entire grid. They could stay online, or be brought back up more easily. Battery storage would be an even more independent use of solar with onsite fuel-free backup. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renewable energy to the rescue<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Characteristically bold, Elon Musk of Tesla <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/10\/09\/elon-musks-offer-to-rebuild-puerto-ricos-electricity-grid-is-a-game-changer-commentary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offered to help rebuild Puerto Rico\u2019s electricity grid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Though ambitious, it is potentially viable. It may require new ways of attracting investors \u2013 which seems to be what Musk is doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, the solar industry is unifying and hopefully lighting Puerto Rico up sooner.
