Going solar also fixes your electricity costs at a low rate, while the price of grid electricity has increased on average <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/data\/browser\/#\/?v=21&amp;f=A&amp;s=0&amp;start=1997&amp;end=2023&amp;id=&amp;linechart=ESRCU_US~&amp;ctype=linechart&amp;maptype=0&amp;map=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2.72% per year over the last 20 years.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s how the cost of solar versus grid energy in Florida compares over 25 years:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.solar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/solar-and-battery-vs-grid-miami-and-tampa-florida.png\" alt=\"solar vs grid electricity costs miami and tampa florida\" width=\"2494\" height=\"1939\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For solar only, the break even point is between 6 and 8 years, and the total savings over 25 years is between $42,000 and $46,000.<\/p>\n<p>For solar and battery, the break even point is between 11 and 13 years and the total savings over 25 years is between $32,500 and $35,500.<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s see why it\u2019s worthwhile to add battery storage to a solar project in Florida.<\/p>\n<h3>Florida has frequent and long lasting power outages<\/h3>\n<p>One of the primary benefits of battery storage is to provide backup power when the grid goes down. And Florida\u2019s grid goes down more frequently and for longer periods of time than almost any other state.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mroelectric.com\/blog\/most-least-power-outages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MRO Electric\u2019s analysis<\/a> of Energy Information Administration data, between 2015 and 2019, Florida ranked:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First for average downtime duration (14.6 hours per outage)\n<ul>\n<li>12 hours caused by major events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Tied for fourth for the most frequent power outages (2.2 per year)\n<ul>\n<li>6 outages caused by major events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Major events \u2013 hurricanes, cyber attacks, and other anomalies \u2013 play a major role in the duration of Florida\u2019s outages. But in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, we\u2019re learning that pairing solar and battery storage are rising to the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>In Tampa, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notateslaapp.com\/news\/998\/how-tesla-s-powerwall-carried-me-through-hurricane-ian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this Floridian describes his experience<\/a> of powering his home with solar and battery during the 32-hour outage during and after Hurricane Ian hit in September 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Further south, 200,000 homes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/02\/us\/solar-babcock-ranch-florida-hurricane-ian-climate\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar powered community of Babcock Ranch<\/a> all have full power while Fort Myers is all but devastated just 12 miles away.<\/p>\n<p>Solar and battery can be a money-saver when the power is on, and a lifeline when the power is off. It can also increase the value of your home.<\/p>\n<h3>Solar increases home value in Florida<\/h3>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zillow.com\/research\/solar-panels-house-sell-more-23798\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study by Zillow<\/a>, homes with solar panels sold for 4.1% more on average than comparable homes without solar in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>In Orlando, that figure was 4.6% in 2019, adding nearly $11,000 to the sale price of the home.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s likely solar panels add even more to your home value in 2022 given the 20% rise in grid electricity prices since 2019 and ever-increasing interest in renewable energy among homebuyers.<\/p>\n<p>Better yet, Florida has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Laws\/Statutes\/2018\/193.624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100% property tax exemption<\/a> for solar panels and battery storage, which means even though solar and battery add value to your home, <em>they<\/em> <em>won\u2019t increase your property tax rate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So even if you plan on moving before your break-even point, you can enjoy short-term energy savings and can recoup the cost of going solar through the sale of your home.<\/p>\n<h3>Home solar can help Florida clean up its energy mix<\/h3>\n<p>In 2020, Florida\u2019s energy mix was around 75% natural gas, which is a nasty substance when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Natural gas is mainly methane, a greenhouse gas with 80 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide. <em>Before it\u2019s even burned<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/natural-gas\/natural-gas-and-the-environment.php#:~:text=Natural%20gas%20is%20a%20relatively,an%20equal%20amount%20of%20energy.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">natural gas accounts for 29% of methane emissions and 3% of total greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once natural gas is burned, it emits carbon dioxide and particulate matter that contribute to climate change and local air pollution.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s ironic, then, that Florida is the most vulnerable state to sea level rise and extreme weather caused by climate change, yet it continues to rely on fossil fuels instead of renewable sources like solar to meet its energy needs.<\/p>\n<p>By installing solar and battery, Floridians can help their state transition away from its reliance on fossil fuels in addition to reducing their electricity costs, providing backup power for outages, and increasing their home values.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.solar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/best-remodel-increase-home-value.jpg\" width=\"869\" height=\"489\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Cons of going solar in Florida<\/h2>\n<p>There is clearly a lot of upside to owning solar and battery storage in Florida. But solar and battery storage are a major investment, so it\u2019s worth considering the entire picture.<\/p>\n<h3>No state rebates or tax credits<\/h3>\n<p>Several states including California, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey offer substantial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/solar-rebates-by-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tax credits and rebates for solar and battery storage<\/a> that can be used in addition to the 30% federal tax credit.<\/p>\n<p>Florida is not one of these states. Although Florida\u2019s residents and energy grid can benefit from more residential solar and battery \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarpowerworldonline.com\/2022\/09\/customer-sited-solar-batteries-340-mw-peak-power-one-day-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like California did during a record heatwave in September 2022<\/a> \u2013 the state does not offer any rebates or tax credits.<\/p>\n<p>It does, however, have a solid net-metering policy and a few tax <em>exemptions<\/em> (which are different than tax credits) that apply to solar and battery. We\u2019ll cover those further down.<\/p>\n<h3>You can\u2019t take solar and battery with you<\/h3>\n<p>One thing to consider when going solar is that if you move \u2013 or evacuate \u2013 you can\u2019t take the solar panels and batteries with you.<\/p>\n<p>If you move, solar and battery stay with the old house. Although solar and battery add to your home value, there\u2019s no guarantee that you\u2019ll recoup the cost of the system in the sale. However, the longer you own the system, the more you\u2019ll save and the more you\u2019ll recoup or profit in a home sale.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of extreme weather events, solar and battery are great backup power sources, but they won\u2019t do much good if you evacuate or your home is destroyed. Solar panels are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationwide.com\/lc\/resources\/home\/articles\/solar-panel-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">typically covered by homeowners insurance<\/a>, but it\u2019s important to check your exact coverage details if you live in an area at risk of hurricane and storm damage.<\/p>\n<h3>Florida\u2019s older residents have less time to save with solar<\/h3>\n<p>To be frank, the older you are, the less time you have to accumulate long-term savings from switching to solar. And with a median age of 42, Florida has the fifth oldest population of any US state or territory.<\/p>\n<p>Another issue is that Florida&#8217;s many retirees may not have the tax liability to apply the full 30% federal solar tax credit. <em>Consult a licensed tax professional for advice regarding the solar tax credit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, solar isn\u2019t always about long-term savings. By using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/solar-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar loan<\/a> instead of paying in cash, you can save money immediately by replacing your electricity bill with a lower monthly payment on your solar panels.<\/p>\n<p>And if you are older, perhaps you\u2019re thinking about your legacy and what you\u2019ll leave behind for your family and future generations. Solar and battery can add value to your estate and contribute to the clean energy transition required to mitigate climate change.<\/p>\n<h3>Upfront cost of solar<\/h3>\n<p>The biggest hurdle to solar and battery is the upfront cost. Even after the 30% tax credit is applied, a typical solar-only project costs between $10,000 to $20,000, and not everybody has that kind of cash laying around.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/solar-financing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar loans can help spread out this cost<\/a>, which makes going solar more accessible. The trick is to find that balance of down payment and monthly payments that achieve your savings goals.<\/p>\n<gs-injectable background = 'true' border='true' primary_color = '#8B72D3<\/p>\n<p>' secondary_color='#f98d7e' utm_campaign = 'get_started_injectable' utm_medium='solar in Florida' content_texts = 'true' upper_text='Compare quotes from multiple' upper_text_span = 'trusted installers' lower_text='See how much solar could lower your' lower_text_span = 'energy costs in Florida!' get_started_text='Get started' only_community_solar='false'><\/gs-injectable>\n<h2>Solar and battery incentives in Florida<\/h2>\n<p>While the state of Florida doesn\u2019t offer rebates or tax credits for solar and battery, it does have some solar-friendly policies.<\/p>\n<h3>Net metering in Florida<\/h3>\n<p>Net energy metering (NEM) \u2013 widely known as net metering \u2013 is a policy that allows solar owners to earn credit for putting excess solar production onto the grid that can be used offset the cost of the electricity pulled off the grid when panels aren&#8217;t producing.<\/p>\n<h4>How does net metering work in Florida?<\/h4>\n<p>Florida has a very strong net metering policy and most utilities pay a full retail rate for solar energy. That means for every kWh of solar energy you put on the grid fully offsets a kWh of electricity you pull off the grid.<\/p>\n<p>Through net metering, solar owners essentially replace their electricity bill with payments on their solar system. Once the system is paid off, you\u2019re paying for neither grid nor solar electricity and saving thousands of dollars per year.<\/p>\n<p>Net metering was instituted statewide in 2008 and has had a tremendous impact on solar adoption. In April 2022, Florida Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynews13.com\/fl\/orlando\/news\/2022\/04\/27\/desantis-vetoes-solar-net-metering-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ron DeSantis vetoed a bill<\/a> that would have phased out Florida\u2019s net metering incentives, citing the \u201csteep increases in the price of gas and groceries, as well as escalating bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Long story short:<\/strong> Net metering is here to stay in Florida and can be used to save tens of thousands of dollars on energy costs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.solar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Solar_Home_Net_Metering.jpg\" alt=\"florida solar net metering\" width=\"1000\" height=\"609\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Florida solar tax exemptions<\/h3>\n<p>Although Florida doesn\u2019t offer a state solar tax <em>credit,<\/em> it does have two tax <em>exemptions<\/em> that can maximize savings from home solar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First, there is a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/floridarevenue.com\/taxes\/taxesfees\/pages\/sales_tax_incent.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>sales tax exemption<\/strong><\/a> for solar energy systems in Florida that applies to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Solar collectors (panels)<\/li>\n<li>Pumps and controls<\/li>\n<li>Photovoltaic power conditioning equipment<\/li>\n<li>Energy storage units (solar batteries)<\/li>\n<li>Accessories integral to a qualifying system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example, the sales tax rate in Miami is 7% (6% for the state of Florida and 1% for the county). On the $34,700 solar and battery quote we used above, that amounts to $2,429 in sales tax that customer doesn&#8217;t pay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then, there\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Laws\/Statutes\/2018\/193.624\">property tax exemption<\/a><\/strong> we covered earlier in the article. To recap, solar and battery can increase the value of your home, but in Florida your property taxes won\u2019t increase as a result of the value added by solar and battery.<\/p>\n<p><em>This article does not consitute tax advice. Consult a licensed tax professional with questions regarding solar tax exemptions.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>30% federal solar and battery tax credit<\/h3>\n<p>While this isn\u2019t unique to Florida, homeowners in all states may qualify for the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit worth 30% of the cost of solar and battery expenditures.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2022, the passage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/inflation-reduction-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a> increased this tax credit from 26% to 30%, where it will stay until 2032.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.com\/learn\/how-getting-a-home-battery-affects-your-federal-solar-incentive-tax-credit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">battery storage that\u2019s <em>not<\/em> connected to solar will qualify for the 30% tax credit<\/a>, as long as it\u2019s above 3 kWh in capacity.<\/p>\n<h2>Is it worth going solar in Florida?<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a fan of cheap electricity, increased home value, and a cleaner energy mix then it&#8217;s totally worth going solar in Florida.
