This Energy Bill Tip Gets Overlooked: Reduce Your Rate, Not Your Comfort Level

Every summer, the same advice makes the rounds. Run fans instead of the AC. Bump the thermostat higher. Wait as long as you can before flipping the system on. Some of it is good advice, and a recent realtor.com report does a great job of calling out what works and what doesn’t.

Here’s the pattern nobody points out. Every one of those tips on this list, and many others, focuses on using less electricity. Which means trading comfort for savings.

The more effective and permanent solution often goes overlooked. You can use fewer kilowatt-hours, or you can pay less for the electricity you need to… dare I say it… enjoy the modern comforts of air conditioning.

Why usage tricks hit a ceiling

To be clear, some of these tips are worth doing. Changing a dirty filter and booking a tune-up genuinely helps an overworked system. And the “Rule of 20” cited in the piece is solid: your AC is built to hold your home about 20% below the outdoor temp, so setting 82 degrees on a 102-degree day is smarter than fighting for 72, because your AC won’t have to run non-stop to reach an unrealistic target.

But look at what these strategies actually buy you.

  • Raising the thermostat saves roughly 3% per degree above 72, per one expert quoted in the story. That adds up slowly, and it caps out fast, because at some point the house is just hot.
  • Fans “cool people, not rooms.” They make you feel cooler while the room stays the same temperature.
  • Delaying the season start saves nothing meaningful. As one pro flatly put it, starting the AC in July doesn’t use less energy than starting it in May.

Simply put: these tips shave a percentage here and there, and the price of doing it is your own comfort. According to a SupplyHouse survey, 77% of homeowners said summer bills are stressing them out, and 15% of surveyed homeowners admitted to sleeping in the heat to dodge the bill.

That’s not a savings plan. That’s a rough night.

The lever the list left out: lowering your price per kWh

Now flip the other lever. If you generate your own electricity on the roof, you stop paying the utility’s rate for a big chunk of your usage. You’re not rationing comfort. You’re lowering what each kilowatt-hour costs you.

For instance, the average utility rate in the U.S. is around 20 cents per kWh. Meanwhile, the typical cost per kWh of rooftop solar electricity without incentives is around 12-14 cents. That’s a 20-40% reduction in your electricity costs without sacrificing any comfort.

Plus, rooftop solar locks in a much lower effective rate for 25-plus years. So, you save more each year as utility rates rise and your solar cost stays flat.

Making the most of your solar power

Here’s the part that makes the math work: net metering, or NEM. When your panels make more power than you’re using, that extra electricity flows back to the grid and your utility credits you for it. When the sun goes down, you pull those credits back. In much of the country, the grid acts as a free battery.

Solar.com’s Advice: Check your net metering rules before you buy. Full-retail NEM is the best case. Some states have moved to lower export rates, which changes the math. In those areas, battery storage can improve the bill savings by allowing you to store and use your low-cost solar power instead of selling it back to the utility for less than it’s worth.

Comfort and savings, not one or the other

The beauty of solar is you don’t have to choose between comfort and cost savings. Better yet, it’s hands-free and the savings last for decades. You don’t have to “Do These 5 Things” to see your bill go down, you simply use the electricity you need at a lower price.
