California's New Battery Milestone & What It Means for Your Home

Batteries are like bacon for the power grid (they make everything better), and California is showing that with a new energy storage milestone. The state now has more than 21,000 megawatts of battery storage online, and it’s changing how the whole grid runs after sunset.

California’s solar & battery milestone

According to the California Energy Commission, the state’s grid battery fleet grew to 21,000 MW and is 41% of the way to its goal of 52,000 MW by 2045. The results are already showing up in the daily energy mix:

  • Storage capacity up 80% from the same period in 2024
  • Solar usage up 22% compared to the same period in 2024
  • Natural gas down 51% compared to the same period in 2024

That last number is the one that matters. For years, the knock on solar was that it stops producing at 5 or 6 p.m., right when people get home and demand spikes. That used to mean firing up natural gas “peaker” plants to meet evening demand, an expensive and carbon-intensive solution.

But with the growing battery fleet, California is stretching its solar power into evenings and nights. And now, for the first time ever, the California grid is using more solar than natural gas electricity.

Why this matters for your house

Your home faces the exact same problem the grid does, just on a smaller scale. Your panels make the most power at midday, when you’re often at work and using very little. Your bill spikes in the evening, when the sun is down and rates are highest.

1. Evening rates are climbing

More utilities are shifting to time-of-use pricing, where the price per kilowatt-hour changes by the hour. Prices are highest in the late afternoon and evening, and a battery lets you sidestep those peak windows by running on your own stored energy.

2. Net metering is getting less generous

Net metering (NEM) is the arrangement that credits you for the excess solar you send back to the grid. In a growing number of areas (especially California), those credits are worth less than they used to be, which stretches out the payback on a solar-only system.

In these areas, a battery is essential to making the math work. When exporting to the grid earns you pennies, keeping that energy in a battery and using it yourself is worth far more. The battery is grid bacon. It makes everything better.

Home battery storage costs

A home battery isn’t free, and we won’t pretend otherwise. Storage adds meaningful cost on top of your panels, so the payback depends heavily on your local rates and your net metering rules.

Here’s the simple test:

  • Strong net metering + flat rates: Panels alone may pay off faster. A battery is mostly for backup peace of mind.
  • Weak net metering + steep evening rates: A battery does real financial work by shifting your usage off peak hours. This is where storage earns its keep.
