Categories of personal information we collect

In the last twelve months, we have collected the categories below when you use Solar.com, request a solar quote, create an account, schedule with an advisor, communicate with us, or complete an order. We keep personal information only as long as reasonably necessary to provide and improve our services, administer your project, maintain business records, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements.

  • Identifiers, such as name, email address, phone number, mailing address, account identifiers, IP address, and similar contact or device identifiers. We use this information to provide quotes, accounts, customer support, scheduling, security, communications, attribution, and service administration. Retention: as long as needed for your account or project, plus applicable legal, tax, accounting, warranty, dispute, and consent-record retention periods.
  • California Customer Records information, such as name, address, phone number, email address, utility and energy-usage information, roof and home specifications, project preferences, order details, and payment-related records. We use this information to model solar options, prepare proposals, support your project, process payments, keep required records, and coordinate services you request. Retention: as long as needed to service your project, plus applicable legal, tax, accounting, warranty, dispute, and consent-record retention periods.
  • Commercial information, such as requested products or services, quotes, proposal selections, orders, payments, refunds, and related transaction history. We use this information to provide requested services, complete transactions, manage customer relationships, improve pricing and product experience, and keep business records. Retention: as long as needed for project administration and required legal, tax, accounting, warranty, and dispute records.
  • Internet or other electronic network activity, such as pages viewed, interactions with our website, device and browser information, referring pages, approximate session data, and analytics events. We use this information for website operations, security, debugging, analytics, product improvement, attribution, advertising measurement, and remarketing. Retention: as long as reasonably needed for those purposes, subject to configured analytics and log-retention periods.
  • Geolocation information at the address or approximate location level that you provide or that is derived from the address you enter. We use this information to assess utility territory, sunlight, available installers, local pricing, incentives, and service availability. Retention: as long as needed for quote, account, project, and business-record purposes.
  • Inferences, such as modeled system size, production estimates, savings estimates, equipment preferences, and project-fit signals. We use this information to personalize quotes, proposal recommendations, advisor support, and product improvements. Retention: as long as needed for your account, project, analytics, and business-record purposes.

Sources of personal information

We collect personal information directly from you, from your use of our website, from service providers that help us operate Solar.com, from utilities or data providers when you authorize or request that connection, and from installers or partners involved in a project you choose to pursue.

How we use personal information

We use personal information to operate Solar.com, provide quotes and proposals, create and manage accounts, verify identity and access, schedule advisor calls, communicate about requested services, process orders and payments, support customers, coordinate projects, improve our website and services, maintain security, prevent fraud, measure marketing performance, comply with law, and enforce our agreements.

How we share information

We share personal information with service providers and contractors that help us operate our business, such as analytics, payments, communications, infrastructure, security, customer-support, and project-administration providers. They are permitted to use personal information only to provide services to us or as otherwise allowed by law.

We share project information with installers after you sign a contract, as a consumer-directed disclosure so the installer can provide installation and related services you requested. Installer agreements are expected to restrict use of that information to the shared customer relationship and related project work.

We use advertising partners, including Google and Meta, for advertising measurement, audience creation, and remarketing. This may involve sharing identifiers, device information, internet activity, and similar online activity data for cross-context behavioral advertising as defined by California law.

Your right to opt out of sharing

California residents have the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell personal information for money, but our use of advertising partners for remarketing and cross-context behavioral advertising may be considered sharing under California law.

To opt out, use the opt-out control below, email privacy@solar.com, or call 888-454-9979 and tell us you want to opt out of sale or sharing. We also honor Global Privacy Control browser signals as an opt-out preference signal for the browser or device that sends the signal.

Your California privacy rights

Subject to legal limits and verification, California residents may request to know the categories and specific pieces of personal information we collected; access and receive a portable copy of personal information; delete personal information; correct inaccurate personal information; opt out of sale or sharing; and be free from discrimination for exercising privacy rights.

How to submit a request and verification

To submit a privacy request, email privacy@solar.com or call 888-454-9979. We may need to verify your identity by matching the information you provide with information we maintain, such as your email address, phone number, service address, account details, or project details. We will respond within 45 days unless we need more time, in which case we may extend the period to 90 days and will notify you.

You may make requests to know or access personal information up to twice in a 12-month period. We may deny or limit a request where permitted by law, including when we cannot verify the requester, when an exception applies, or when retaining information is necessary for legal, security, transactional, warranty, accounting, dispute, or consent-record purposes.

Authorized agents

You may authorize an agent to submit a request on your behalf. We may require proof of the agent's authority, verification of your identity, and confirmation that you gave the agent permission to act for you, unless the agent has a valid power of attorney under California law.

Sensitive personal information

We do not collect Social Security numbers or sensitive personal information as defined by California law for the purpose of inferring characteristics about you. Because we do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes that require a right to limit, we do not provide a separate Limit the Use of My Sensitive Personal Information link.
