How does Sun First! compare where you live? Rankings are local; an installer that leads one city can trail in the next. See how they rank in your city →

Why this differs from star ratings: most five-star reviews say “great company” and stop, and star averages reward that. These category scores only count reviews with concrete evidence, weighted by recency and the reviewer’s track record. A company can hold a strong star average while specific categories score lower; that gap is usually where the real story is. Categories with more complaints than praise are the questions worth asking any bidder, not necessarily dealbreakers.

What this data covers: *Counts on this page, including the totals up top, come from investor-owned-utility interconnection records (SCE, SDG&E, PG&E). Work in municipal-utility territory, such as LADWP or city utilities, and outside California does not appear here, so this company's true totals are higher than shown. Unlike the county rankings, this profile also shows counties below the 250-install ranking floor.

Sun First! reviews: what customers say

An independent synthesis of published customer feedback across Google and Yelp, updated September 28, 2026. Green marks praise, amber mixed experiences, red complaints.

Sales & proposal integrity

Sales Integrity7.8/10

Reviewers generally describe the sales and proposal process as knowledgeable and straightforward. Praise centers on clear explanations, honest guidance, and helpful estimates, while a small set of complaints alleges misrepresentation, poor follow-through, or pressure during the sale.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Knowledgeable, transparent guidance. Several reviewers say sales staff were well-informed and upfront about the process from the beginning. They describe consultations and estimates as clear and helpful. Representative review excerpt: "I worked with Braden and he was helpful, honest, and very transparent about the whole process from start to finish."

Helpful proposals and estimates. Reviews also point to practical proposal support, including free estimates and guidance tailored to the home. These customers say the team made the decision process easier to understand. Representative review excerpt: "Dave was great and gave us a free estimate and was very helpful!"

A few concerns about sales conduct. A small number of reviewers report concerns about sales claims, cold outreach, or projects that they say did not progress as expected. These complaints are present but much less common than the positive feedback. Representative review excerpt: "Their salesman will completely lie to you to make the sale."

Price & financing transparency

Price Transparency6.8/10

Feedback on pricing and financing is mixed.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Smooth financing experience. Some customers say the paperwork and financing process was easy to complete and came with helpful guidance. They describe the transaction as organized and low-friction. Representative review excerpt: "The paperwork and financing was a breeze, the installation happened in a blink of an eye, and Brandon’s guidance throughout was warm, personal and so helpful."

Pricing pricing for some customers. Reviews also mention favorable pricing, with a few customers saying the quoted price felt strong or hard to beat. These comments suggest the value proposition worked well for part of the review set. Representative review excerpt: "The price was excellent, my neighbors recommended them and Dave came over gave a quote and finished the job quickly."

Payment and cost concerns. Complaints focus on payments running higher than expected, along with other cost-related frustrations after the project began. A few reviewers also raise issues tied to incentive timing or financial consequences of project delays. Representative review excerpt: "Payments are higher than stated and higher than my electric bill ever was."

Communication & coordination

Communication7.7/10

Most reviewers describe Sun First as responsive and organized during the project. The strongest praise highlights quick answers, informed staff, and clear step-by-step updates, while complaints mostly involve unanswered messages or weak follow-through when projects stalled.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Responsive to questions. Several reviewers say they received quick answers from the office and felt supported when questions came up. They describe the company as attentive during the planning and installation phases. Representative review excerpt: "When I had questions about the process, I always got the answer quickly from the office, and once (believe it or not) the CEO even called to give me a..."

These customers describe a coordinated process with good handoffs. Representative review excerpt: "Wyn Hoag and the rest of the folks at Sun First Solar kept us informed every step of the way thru the installation process, including removing our old updated solar..."

Some communication gaps. The main complaints involve unanswered emails, hard-to-reach staff, or a sense that communication weakened once the job was underway. A few reviewers report repeated attempts to get a response before concerns were addressed. Representative review excerpt: "Repeated emails have gone unanswered and I can tell that since the basic install is over and they have 80% of my money, that they no longer care about finishing..."

Timeline reliability

Timeline Reliability7.3/10

Timeline feedback is generally positive, with many reviewers saying projects moved ahead promptly and inspections or interconnection were handled smoothly. Still, a smaller set of complaints describes delays, permit confusion, or projects that took far longer than expected.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Fast start and activation for many jobs. Some reviewers say installation began quickly after the estimate and that the system was running without a long wait. These experiences suggest strong schedule performance on many projects. Representative review excerpt: "Within a month of the estimate we had them installing the panels and they were up and running immediately."

Permitting and inspection coordination. Reviews also note that city inspection and utility interconnection went smoothly, and in some cases the team worked through approval details with local officials. That points to solid permitting coordination in many jobs. Representative review excerpt: "Sun First Solar made sure city inspection and PG&E interconnection went smoothly and promptly."

Delays and permit issues for a minority. Complaint patterns center on long delays, unfinished projects, or confusion around permits during the build. A few reviewers say these issues extended the timeline well beyond expectations. Representative review excerpt: "I will say there was some confusion when the City Engineer came by and asked for the city permit and the crew didn't have it."

Workmanship & site care

Workmanship8.4/10

Workmanship receives strong marks overall. Reviewers frequently describe professional crews, efficient installation, and smooth execution, while only a small number report roof damage or repair problems.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Professional installation crews. Many reviewers say the installers were courteous, efficient, and professional on site. They also mention good cleanup and a generally smooth installation experience. Representative review excerpt: "They provided very professional installers who worked efficiently, courteously, and left me with very good information on how to maximize savings with my new system."

Smooth execution from design through install. Other reviews describe the project as moving cleanly from design to contract to installation. These customers say the work was handled professionally from start to finish. Representative review excerpt: "From designing to contract to installation, Sun First Solar teams executed everything smoothly and professionally."

A few roof-damage complaints. The main complaints allege roof damage, repair disputes, or other site-related mistakes during installation. These reports are limited, but they are the clearest negative pattern in this category. Representative review excerpt: "They destroyed roof on commercial building, were unwilling to repair damages for a mistake they made."

Long-term support & performance

Long-Term Support8.4/10

Long-term support and system performance are among the strongest-reviewed areas. Customers often say the system performs well after activation and that follow-up support remains responsive, though a few complaints describe unresolved issues or incomplete post-installation help.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Responsive post-install support. Several reviewers say questions were answered quickly even after installation, and that the team continued to help when follow-up issues came up. This points to strong post-sale support for many customers. Representative review excerpt: "When I had questions about the process, I always got the answer quickly from the office, and once (believe it or not) the CEO even called to give me a..."

Strong system performance. Reviewers also report that their systems have performed well over time, including during outages and harder production months. These comments suggest reliable ongoing system function. Representative review excerpt: "I am approaching 1 year since installation and am very pleased with the way the system has worked through grid outages and especially through the difficult months of December -..."

Some unresolved post-install concerns. A smaller group of complaints says post-install problems were not handled to their satisfaction or that important details were missed before completion. These concerns are present, but they are much less common than the positive feedback. Representative review excerpt: "And then they were ready to go; and oh, by the way, here are the drawings that we forgot to discuss with you and the conduit routes that we didn't..."

Bottom line: Sun First’s review profile is strongest in workmanship, system performance, and sales integrity, with most customers describing knowledgeable staff, professional installation, and solid follow-up support. The main softer spots are pricing transparency and, to a lesser extent, communication and timeline reliability, where some reviewers report higher-than-expected payments, delays, or unanswered messages.

Important context: this chart shows investor-owned-utility records only. Companies that shift work toward municipal-utility territory (LADWP and city power departments) or other states will show declining bars here even while building steadily elsewhere, and 2025-26 records also lag real installation dates. Treat this as a partial window, not the company's full trajectory.

How we built this data

Methodology: Counts are residential PV interconnections in investor-owned-utility territory (PG&E, SCE, SDG&E) per CPUC Rule 21 public records through May 2026. Postal and name variants are merged. Municipal utility territory such as LADWP, Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, Anaheim, and Riverside Public Utilities is not included in those CPUC counts. Counts show recorded installations, not quality ratings. Reported costs are self-reported on owned-system interconnections. No installer can pay for placement.

Who we are: Solar.com is a solar marketplace — we connect homeowners with installers and earn a fee when projects move forward. These rankings and scores are computed from public installation records and published customer reviews. No installer can pay for placement, and no installer — including those we work with — can pay to change a score.
