#445 of 678 scored in California by Solar.com Installer Score

How does Grid Alternatives compare where you live? Rankings are local; an installer that leads one city can trail in the next. See how they rank in your city →

Why this differs from star ratings: most five-star reviews say “great company” and stop, and star averages reward that. These category scores only count reviews with concrete evidence, weighted by recency and the reviewer’s track record. A company can hold a strong star average while specific categories score lower; that gap is usually where the real story is. Categories with more complaints than praise are the questions worth asking any bidder, not necessarily dealbreakers.

Where Grid Alternatives builds

County-by-county activity from CPUC records through May 2026.

What this data covers: *Counts on this page, including the totals up top, come from investor-owned-utility interconnection records (SCE, SDG&E, PG&E). Work in municipal-utility territory, such as LADWP or city utilities, and outside California does not appear here, so this company's true totals are higher than shown. Unlike the county rankings, this profile also shows counties below the 250-install ranking floor.

Grid Alternatives reviews: what customers say

An independent synthesis of published customer feedback across Google and Yelp, updated September 28, 2026. Green marks praise, amber mixed experiences, red complaints.

Sales & proposal integrity

Sales Integrity7.0/10

Reviewers describe the sales and proposal process as clear and easy to understand, with explanations that set expectations well. The available evidence is entirely positive, and complaints are not a prominent theme in this category.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Clear explanations. Reviewers say the team explained the process in detail and was easy to work with from the start. Representative review excerpt: "Throughout the whole process GA was very easy to work with and explained everything to me in detail."

Helpful program framing. Some reviewers describe the program as making solar accessible and helping households understand rebates and related costs. Representative review excerpt: "They make solar power possible for low-income homeowners in the area by doing free installations and helping them get rebates."

Price & financing transparency

Price Transparency7.0/10

Feedback on pricing and financing is largely positive, with reviewers saying costs were handled clearly and, in some cases, covered for them. Mentions of lower electric bills and rebate support suggest the pricing conversation generally landed well in the reviewed material.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Costs handled clearly. Reviewers report that upgrade-related costs were covered and that the process felt straightforward from a pricing standpoint. Representative review excerpt: "They completely covered the cost of the upgrade, by an electrician of my choice as we were further out of their standard service area for their own electricians."

Lower bill reports. Some reviewers say the resulting electric bill was very low, which they linked to the program’s financing or cost structure. Representative review excerpt: "Thanks to Grid Alternatives we are having a very low Electric Bill."

Communication & coordination

Communication6.1/10

Communication is the most mixed area in the review set. Many reviewers describe responsive support and smooth coordination, but a meaningful minority report difficulty reaching the team, slow follow-up, or unclear ownership when problems came up.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Responsive for many customers. Several reviewers say the team was easy to contact and responded right away, with coordination that felt smooth. Representative review excerpt: "They are easy to contact and respond right away."

Clear communication breakdowns. Other reviewers report missed calls, unanswered messages, and difficulty getting help when issues arose. Representative review excerpt: "They never answer their phones, respond to emails or voice messages."

Project follow-through concerns. Some reviewers describe problems keeping work on track and getting timely responses from the organization. Representative review excerpt: "Their ability to communicate and keep work on track is beyond terrible😬"

Timeline reliability

Timeline Reliability6.4/10

Timeline feedback is somewhat mixed. Reviewers often describe fast installations and successful completion, but others report delays, slow resolution, or uncertainty about next steps after the install phase.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Fast installs reported. Some reviewers describe crews completing installs quickly, including jobs finished in a couple of days or even within hours. Representative review excerpt: "In my fourplex we all qualified and in September GRID's big crew of lead solar installers, techs from other areas being trained, and volunteers came and in two days hooked..."

Delays after installation. Other reviewers say they were left waiting for follow-up or next-step action and were unsure who to contact.

Workmanship & site care

Workmanship7.2/10

Workmanship reviews are mostly favorable, with many customers describing organized crews, efficient installs, and professional conduct on site. There is one complaint about crew behavior during an install, but it is outweighed by the broader praise in the review set.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Organized, efficient crews. Reviewers frequently describe the installation crews as knowledgeable, organized, and efficient. Representative review excerpt: "I attended the first volunteer install and was amazed with how organized, knowledgeable and efficient the crew of grid were, I learned a lot from everyone and would love to..."

Quick completion. Some reviewers say the work was completed quickly and the crew left the site in good shape afterward. Representative review excerpt: "They came and installed the solar in 4-5 hours and left."

One site-behavior complaint. One reviewer reports that the crew appeared to spend excessive time talking and taking breaks during the job. Representative review excerpt: "They would be done in an hour if they didn't waste time talking loudly, laughing and joking it up, taking breaks every 5 seconds and cranking up their music in..."

Long-term support & performance

Long-Term Support7.7/10

Post-install feedback is mostly positive, with reviewers saying the system performed well and service follow-up was effective when parts or fixes were needed. A smaller set of comments points to support difficulties when customers needed help after the installation, but that is not the dominant pattern.Solar.com's composite of published customer feedback, not a customer quote

Performance reports are strong. Several reviewers say their systems produced well after activation, including display readings that showed strong output. Representative review excerpt: "Also, according to my display panel, the panels are overproducing by about 30%, than what the initial projections were!"

Responsive repair follow-up. Some reviewers report that when parts arrived, the team came back quickly to complete the fix. Representative review excerpt: "When we told them that the parts have arrived they came the next day and fixed it up."

Support gaps for some customers. A small number of reviewers say they had trouble getting help after installation when they needed assistance. Representative review excerpt: "They do help the people that need to learn how to work on panels & that is awesome, however for people whom are at their mercy they aren’t helpful at..."

Bottom line: The overall pattern is favorable, but a meaningful subset of reviewers describe delayed responses, scheduling friction, and difficulty getting help when issues came up.

Important context: this chart shows investor-owned-utility records only. Companies that shift work toward municipal-utility territory (LADWP and city power departments) or other states will show declining bars here even while building steadily elsewhere, and 2025-26 records also lag real installation dates. Treat this as a partial window, not the company's full trajectory.

How we built this data

Methodology: Counts are residential PV interconnections in investor-owned-utility territory (PG&E, SCE, SDG&E) per CPUC Rule 21 public records through May 2026. Postal and name variants are merged. Municipal utility territory such as LADWP, Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, Anaheim, and Riverside Public Utilities is not included in those CPUC counts. Counts show recorded installations, not quality ratings. Reported costs are self-reported on owned-system interconnections. No installer can pay for placement.

Who we are: Solar.com is a solar marketplace — we connect homeowners with installers and earn a fee when projects move forward. These rankings and scores are computed from public installation records and published customer reviews. No installer can pay for placement, and no installer — including those we work with — can pay to change a score.
